Reading Rockets Program: Early intervention for beginning readers
Reading Rockets is a general education program that provides support to first and second grade students who may be in need of additional instruction in reading. Students meet with the Reading Specialist in small groups (generally no more than 5 children) to receive extra support in foundational skills such as phonics and word recognition and to learn strategies for reading with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. It is the goal of the program to ensure that students gain the skills and form the habits they need in order to become confident, efficient readers who meet grade level benchmarks for reading.
Classroom teachers refer students who are reading below grade level for participation in Reading Rockets. Students meet with me in the Learning Center for 30 minute sessions four to five times each week. Reading Rockets is a support program and does not replace reading instruction in the classroom. The time spent in Reading Rockets is in addition to the regular classroom Language Arts program and I meet with classroom teachers regularly to discuss student progress. Students exit the program when they have reached grade level benchmarks for reading.
We use leveled texts and appropriate scaffolding strategies so that students experience success, view themselves as readers and build the skills and endurance that will help them to become strong, confident readers. We use leveled texts that are at student instructional levels (90-94% accuracy) to stretch students as readers and texts that are at student independent levels (95%-100% accuracy) to build fluency and confidence. The program we use is called Fountas & Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention and the books in the program are leveled in the same way as books used for instruction by classroom teachers, which provides consistency between the classroom and our Reading Rocket program. Additionally, we the Sonday System, which is based on Orton-Gillingam methods, and offers structured, multi-sensory reading intervention for beginning readers.
